SWAYAM-NPTEL Local Chapter

What is SWAYAM-NPTEL Local Chapter?

SWAYAM comprises 9 National Coordinators (NCs) namely NPTEL, CEC, UGC, AICTE, NIOS, IIMB, NITTTR, IGNOU and NCERT. The NCs offer online courses in the MOOC format through funding received from SWAYAM.

To better adopt MOOC integration to curriculum, every higher educational academic institution (College/University) within the country can become a Local Chapter of SWAYAM.

Once an institution becomes a SWAYAM Local Chapter, it can effectively facilitate MOOC adoption among students. The portal provides monitoring facilities to faculty members and the SWAYAM Coordinator (Single Point of Contact) to track learner progress.

Impact of Local Chapter in the College

Before becoming a Local Chapter, very few students and faculty members were aware of SWAYAM-NPTEL courses.

After obtaining Local Chapter status, students and faculty members have been regularly informed about workshops, seminars and courses through emails, WhatsApp groups and social media.

The SWAYAM courses conducted during the July–December 2025 and January–April 2026 sessions were widely publicized through posters, emails, chat groups and social media platforms.

What are the benefits of joining SWAYAM-NPTEL courses and getting a Certificate?

An NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) certificate is an accredited credential from IITs/IISc, primarily used to transfer course credits in universities, stand out in job placements by verifying technical skills, and qualify for internships or research opportunities.

Key Benefits of an NPTEL Certificate

  • Resume Differentiator: It proves self-motivation and technical depth to employers. The certificates are co-signed by IITs and can feature "Elite" or "Topper" badges based on the candidate's exam performance.
  • Internships & Higher Studies: Many research centers, IIT professors, and partner companies utilize the NPTEL platform for recruitment and summer internship drives, especially for high-scoring learners.
  • University Credit Transfer (subject to University norms): Under UGC/AICTE guidelines, universities can allow transfer up to 40% of course credits using SWAYAM/NPTEL certificates.
  • Faculty Development Programs (FDP): For educators and professors, NPTEL courses are often approved by AICTE as FDP points, aiding in career promotions.

What are the types of Certificates?

NPTEL certificates are issued in four categories based on the final consolidated score, which is calculated from weekly assignments (25%) and the final proctored examination (75%). The minimum passing score is 40%.

Certificate Categories

Certificate Category Eligibility Description
Elite + Gold Score ≥ 90% Awarded to learners who score 90% or above. These students are also recognized as "Toppers".
Elite + Silver 75% – 89% Awarded to learners who score between 75% and 89%.
Elite 60% – 74% Awarded to learners who score between 60% and 74%.
Successfully Completed 40% – 59% Awarded to learners who pass with a score between 40% and 59%.

Specialized & Advanced Certificates

  • Programming Certificate: For specific programming courses, NPTEL adds an unproctored programming examination, adjusting the weightage (25% assignments, 25% programming examination, 50% proctored examination) to issue a specialized Type 2 Programming Certificate.
  • Domain Certification: Earned by completing a pre-defined sequence of 5 to 6 specific courses within a particular discipline (e.g., Data Science, VLSI).
  • Industry Certifications: Specialized badges and certifications mapped to industry tracks, such as those offered in partnership with Ansys.
