The Department of Physics, Maulana Azad College, presently under the affiliation of the University of Calcutta, has started functioning in the year 1926. In the year 1961, the department became a full-fledged department with Physics as both General and Honours subject under this University. Since 1961, many students have established themselves in future life after being graduated from this department. For example, Bikash Chakraborty (Bhatnagar Laureate and Professor of Physics, ex-Director, SINP, Kolkata), Dr. Ashok Sen (Professor of Physics, SINP), Mr. Nurul Haque (IAS), Dr. Prabir Goswami (Professor of Physics, Institute of Radio-physics and Electronics, Science College, Kolkata), Dr. Tapas Ranjan Middya (Professor of Physics, JU), Dr. Satyajit Hazra (Professor of Physics, SINP), Dr. Debades Bandyopadhyay (Professor of Physics, SINP), Dr. Tapas Kumar Ballav (JU) and Dr. Sudipta Bandyopadhyay (CU) were ex-students of this department. Several eminent personalities in Physics recognised in the world have visited and delivered seminar lectures and course works in this department.
The performance of the students of Physics Department of Maulana Azad College in University Examinations over the years is commendable. They have established themselves in various fields of activities. In research they developed their skill in different research institutes like TIFR, ISC, IITs, ISM, IACS, SINP, SNBNCBS, etc in India and abroad. About forty per cent of the present strength of students are Inspire Fellows and some others get Minority scholarships. Two students get JBNSTS Fellowship.
Being a Centre with Potential for Excellence (CPE) in 2010 and a DBT STAR COLLEGE in 2011, Physics Department of Maulana Azad College has a determined effort for growth and progress although there is acute space problem. The department will utilize corridor for General Laboratory. As per NAAC Peer Team Report-2016, this Department has Potential for new Post Graduate Course and the Department may take initiatives to reach the goal. The proposal is being made keeping in view the tremendous potential of the subject Physics, and the aspirations of eligible students.
Eminent teachers, like Professor Shyamal Sengupta and Professor Rajendra Lal Sengupta taught in this department. After Prof Sengupta Prof. S. N. Goswami developed this department, such as introduction of Honours Course, entry of Girl students, etc. during his longest work as Head. Prof P. K. Choudhury, Ex Director of Public Instruction and PRS Scholar, also acted as Head. Prof. Jishnu Dey created Azad Physics Center in the Department and leads a research group with publications in scientific journals of repute like Physics Review Letters. The present faculty members are most dedicated and highly competent with their innovative methods of teaching both in theoretical and experimental physics, recognized through their publications in reputed international and national journals. Two of the present faculties are Humboldt Fellow, Germany and a Post-doctoral Fellow in the University of Trento, Italy.
Choice based credit system (CBCS) has been introduced in the academic session 2018-19 in the department of Physics. Presently, this department is comprised of seven full time faculty, one part time faculty and two technical staff. Teaching staff are actively involved with class – room teaching as well as research work. The department has potential of sophisticated instruments-rich general and computer laboratories and a seminar library also comprising of more than 500 books.
