Department of Mathematics

Department of Mathematics Overview

The Department of Mathematics at Maulana Azad College is a cornerstone of the college's science stream, offering both specialized (Honours) and General Mathematics courses. Established in 1926, the department boasts a rich history of academic excellence and a dedicated faculty committed to fostering a love of Mathematics among its students.

The department's curriculum, designed by the University of Calcutta, provides a rigorous foundation in mathematical concepts while emphasizing critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills. Students have the opportunity to explore various branches of Mathematics, including algebra, calculus, differential equations and more.

Beyond academics, the department strives to create a supportive and engaging learning environment. Faculty members are known for their approachable nature and commitment to student success. The department also organizes various extracurricular activities, such as seminars, workshops, and guest lectures, to enrich the learning experience and expose students to the broader applications of Mathematics.

The Department of Mathematics at Maulana Azad College plays a vital role in shaping the future of its students, equipping them with the mathematical knowledge and skills necessary to excel in their chosen fields and contribute meaningfully to society.

Innovative Teaching:

  • The faculties are equipped with ICT-based teaching methodologies.
  • Students are able to present their innovative contributions in departmental seminars, webinars and math fests.
  • The department publishes an annual magazine, ‘MATHZIN,’ featuring contributions from students and alumni.
  • CIE (Continuous Internal Evaluation) is an important part of student assessment.
  • Student-centric methodologies (demonstration, discussion and assignments) are used as part of the assessment process.
  • Feedback from end-semester students is collected, analysed, and proper actions are taken.
  • CO-PO mapping and attainment offer a systematic approach to tracking and enhancing student performance, aligning educational efforts with institutional goals and ensuring the quality and relevance of academic programs.

Student’s Progression to Higher Education:

  • Every year, our students score impressively in IIT JAM and get admission to various IITs.
  • Our students are also selected for the MTTS Programme (Mathematics Talent and Training Search Programme), an all-India intensive training programme in Mathematics.
  • Many of our students have been admitted to premier mathematical institutes in the country, such as CMI (Chennai), ISI (Kolkata and Bangalore), RKMVERI (Belur), and Central Universities (like Delhi University, Hyderabad University, and Pondicherry University).
  • A few students have also been enrolled in fields like Data Science and Data Analytics at RKMVERI (Belur) and BHU.
  • Students have also been selected to pursue careers in Management at IIMs and MCA programs.
